English as a Second Language
English as a Second Language (ESL)
In accordance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Chickasaw City School System will ensure that English Language Learners (ELLs), Migrant, and Immigrant students have access to the same free, appropriate public education that is provided to all children in the district. Chickasaw City School System will remove all barriers to enrollment of these students and assist in securing necessary documents.
Identification and Placement
All schools in the Chickasaw City School System conduct the Home Language Survey to identify National Origin Minority students. Those with a non-English language background are assessed for English proficiency using the W-APT screener, and assigned appropriate service.
All English language learners (ELLs) are placed in the regular education program at the age-appropriate grade level. Those whose W-APT scores indicate a need for English language support receive ESL services. In making the decision to place a student in ESL, both linguistic proficiency and academic achievement of the student are taken into account. The decision to offer ESL services to a student is made by the ELL committee consisting of the ESL staff member serving the school, the principal or designee, the classroom teacher and the parent.
